The Missing Link How the Chassis Shortage is Squeezing Drayage

If you're involved in logistics, "chassis" might be a word that evokes a collective groan. For those less familiar, a chassis is essentially the specialized trailer that a shipping container sits on, allowing it to be hauled by a truck from a port or rail yard to its final destination. In the intricate dance of the global supply chain, drayage (the short-haul transportation of these containers) is a critical, often overlooked, lynchpin. And right now, the drayage industry is facing a persistent and painful chassis shortage, with ripple effects impacting everything from delivery times to your bottom line.

The chassis shortage isn't a new phenomenon, but it continues to be a stubborn problem. Several factors contribute to this headache like skyrocketing demand, manufacturing hurdles, excessive dwell times,  aging fleets and maintenance just to name a few. 

The scarcity of chassis isn't just an inconvenience, it's a significant disruption that is driving up costs and creating bottlenecks throughout the supply chain.  Chassis shortage cause increased drayage rates, demurrage and per diem charges.  Lets not forget about the delays and bottleneck causing reduced efficiency, driver frustration, inventory build up and storage costs. 

While there's no single magic bullet, stakeholders across the supply chain are working on solutions and strategies to mitigate the impact with improved visibility, enhanced chassis pool management and the investment in new equipment.  Following the lead of the Port of Virginia, the S.C. Ports Authority became the nation's second port system to establish its own chassis pool program. Launched in 2023 through a $200 million investment, the SMART Pool Chassis Program provides thousands of chassis available for lease directly from the Port of Charleston's terminal, addressing critical demand within the drayage industry

The chassis shortage serves as a potent reminder of how interconnected our global supply chains truly are. The seemingly simple act of moving a container from a port to a warehouse relies on a complex web of resources, and when one link is strained, the entire chain feels the pressure. As we move forward, a collaborative and technologically advanced approach will be key to overcoming this critical challenge and ensuring the smooth flow of goods.
