SC Ports opens Cosgrove Avenue extension, new pedestrian bridge
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – SC Ports has officially opened the new Cosgrove Avenue extension and pedestrian bridge, a critical new piece of infrastructure for the Port's Navy Base Intermodal Facility (NBIF). The project, which was completed on September 4, 2025, improves traffic flow and enhances safety for both vehicles and pedestrians in the North Charleston area.
The new extension allows Cosgrove Avenue to pass above the main rail yard, preventing delays for local drivers and businesses. By elevating the road, trains can now move freely to and from the NBIF without stopping vehicle traffic, a long-standing issue for the community. The project also features a separate pedestrian bridge, ensuring safe passage for residents and commuters who walk or bike between nearby neighborhoods, Riverfront Park, and businesses.
Key to Port Efficiency and Community Safety 🌉
The Cosgrove Avenue extension and bridge are vital components of the NBIF, a near-port, intermodal rail yard that will increase SC Ports' rail capacity to 1 million rail lifts per year. The NBIF connects the Port of Charleston to inland markets throughout the Southeast via Class I railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern. This new infrastructure will not only boost the Port's competitiveness but also provide significant benefits to the local community.
"This new gateway to Riverfront Park marks an important step in the redevelopment of the former Navy Base," said City of North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess. "The opening of the Cosgrove Avenue overpass improves pedestrian safety, enhances mobility and connectivity, and provides residents with more convenient access to economic opportunities, recreational amenities, and future community dev
A Collaborative Effort 🤝
The opening ceremony was attended by a variety of local and state leaders, reflecting the broad support for the project. Representatives from Navy Yard Charleston and Charleston Moves were also present, highlighting the collaborative nature of the project. Charleston Moves, a local non-profit dedicated to improving walking and biking infrastructure, has long advocated for safer crossings in the area, including a separate study on the nearby Northbridge. The completion of this pedestrian bridge aligns with their mission to create a more connected and accessible community.
